Travel
An online travel resource - this website is designed to provide reviews and information for travellers on booking part or all of their holiday online - including flights, hotel accommodation, travel insurance and more. In the coming months we will be adding links, articles and reviews for those that love travel.
Flights
With the distances inside and outside of Australia, most holidays tend to start and end with a flight. For domestic flights, there are currently only three main airlines - Qantas, Virgin Blue and Jetstar - but it is normally possible to find a cheap direct flight. Not all three airlines fly to all destinations so it is best to check this first. For international flights, many of the major international airlines fly to Australia, and if you are able to be flexible with travel dates you are more likely to find an inexpensive flight. Read about how to minimise jet lag.
Accommodation
With hotel accommodation, it is worth booking in advance, but not so far in advance that the sense of adventure of a holiday is affected. Look for somewhere close, as there is a real freedom with staying in hotels situated close to the city and/or attractions. This will allow you to do more, and walking is one of the best ways to really experience a destination. Wotif is an excellent website when looking for available accomodation and offers discount rates. Reviews by past travellers may reveal hotels to avoid.
Travel insurance
Referred to on so many travel websites as a "safeguard", travel insurance will cover many unexpected situations - including overseas medical and emergency expenses, lost or stolen luggage and cancellation fees. Online travel insurance is definitely the better option though - travel agents will make significant commissions and in the end it is the traveller paying the freight. The travel insurance policy wording will detail any exclusions and conditions - these are definitely worth knowing before you book anything.
Rental cars
Rental cars are fun, just don't drive offroad. Two main considerations in choosing the most appropriate car to rent are the cost and how much space you require. Read the rental vehicle agreement - be aware of any charge for additional kilometres and any excess payable in the event of an accident or damage. It is often possible to pay a little extra to reduce or eliminate the excess. If you do have a travel insurance policy, check whether rental vehical excess cover is included as this may solve the problem. Drive Now provides comparison prices.
Tours
Though they are likely to cost a little, organised tours can really help you get the most out of sightseeing etc when you are somewhere you haven't visited before. More than anything else, they will make sure you get to see all the postcard scenes and images in real life. A good tour guide will provide a combination of history, information and entertainment. Probably the most disappointing is to find yourself on a tour with too many other people - look for an operator which takes smaller groups for a more memorable experience. |
