Developing a Master Travel Checklist of Things to Take When Travelling

No one enjoys arriving at a travel destination only to discover they don't have the things they need. One of the best ways to try to avoid this situation is to develop a master checklist for traveling. A checklist will help you identify all of the things to take with you when travelling away from home - everything from clothing to medicine to passports. While you can't guarantee that you won't occasionally miss or forget something, developing the master checklist significantly increases the likelihood that you'll have what you need when you get where you're going.

What to take when travelling will be different for every person. However, there are some general categories for your master travel checklist that will help you identify the items you need most.

Clothing

No one leaves home for a holiday or vacation without clothes, of course. The key though is to pack enough outfits so that you have one for every day of your travel, plus one extra in case of an emergency. Or for longer trips, at least enough changes of clothes so that you will not need to continually wash (it is supposed to be a holiday after all!). In addition, you should be aware of variations in climate and weather. If you're traveling from New York to North Carolina in January, you're going to need different clothes than if you were staying in New York. Putting enough clothing of the right type on your list will help make your trip a complete success.

Personal Toiletries

Be sure to include things like hair care products, deodorant and a toothbrush. You may also wish to add your own soap and shampoo to the master checklist, as the soap and shampoo in a hotel may irritate your skin and come in particularly small quantities. Add any other personal hygiene items to your master checklist that may apply to your specific situation.

Health Concerns

Medications are an important thing to take when travelling. In addition to any prescription medication, you may want to bring a decongestant, motion sickness medication, pain reliever, anti-diarrheal medication or allergy medications. This travel checklist category should include any emergency medical equipment or medications.

Important Documents

If you're traveling out of the country, you need to make sure that you've got everything you need to take in respect of necessary paperwork. You'll definitely need your passport, but it wouldn't hurt to have the telephone number and location of your country's embassy available as well. Even if you're traveling somewhere much closer to home, you want to make sure you have maps, hotel reservation numbers, airline tickets and any other important paperwork.

Financial Concerns

Finally, you need to make sure that you've got things on your master travel checklist that provide for your financial needs while you're traveling. Make sure you take credit or debit cards when travelling, and travellers cheques or whatever other financial items you might wish to have access while you're away from home.
